The calm of the Romanza gym in Mexico City was interrupted yesterday by television crews and reporters as the WBO and WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez began his first day of training for his mega fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. scheduled for July 18th.
“I am sure that I am going to defeat Mayweather. I know that he is five inches taller, that he has a little bit more reach and that he is a great fighter but I know how to defeat him and that is what I am going to do on July 18th,” Marquez stated as he began his daily work out.
“It is not the first time that I am the underdog. For example, I have fought Manny Pacquiao twice and I was the underdog both times and although I lost one by points and the other we tied, I am sure that I won both fights,” Marquez stated matter of factly. “So much so that since then, he won’t fight me. He says that he waits to fight in November against Mayweather because he thinks that Floyd is going to beat me but in November I am going to be his rival unless he backs out again.”
“It was pretty spectacular. He caught him flush. I was going for Manny but I didn’t think it was going to end so soon,” Marquez commented regarding Pacquiao’s knock out of Ricky Hatton. “A little before the bout I told Hatton to use his waist to be able to slip the punches of the Filipino and he said he would but he didn’t. Besides, Hatton is what we saw, agressive, strong but not with much technical skill.”
Marquez ran in the morning in the desert and in the afternoon he performed a series of excersises and shadowboxed to finalize his first day of training. He mentioned that when there is about a month and a half to the fight he will begin to spar with welterweight fighters.
Roberto Diaz, assistant matchmaker for Golden Boy Promotions will send to fighters from the U.S. with Mayweather’s style to Mexico City.
Nacho Beristain, trainer of Marquez, stated that his fighter will perform special activities to gain strength and go up to 143 lbs, the catch weight for the bout against Mayweather. He will also play basketball and handball. He also mentioned that he wouldn’t be against training in Big Bear located in the mountains of California in case there is any issues with the swine flu in Mexico City.
“I would like to train in Mexico but I would go to Big Bear in case of an extreme case,” Marquez concluded.

Ive been watching alot of the past fights for both marquez and mayweather. i too am not a big fan of mayweather, and am a fan of marquez. 1. marquez is not a sore looser, he really feels that he won and i can’t blame him for that. those two fights were auwesome! and really close almost too close to call. you see we have marquezs’ skill verses mannys’ devistating power, mix in marquezs’ undieing will to keep going and his heart and you have one hell of a match up. and pac’s got a chin aswell he was hit pretty hard a couple of times!. these guys really should close out the show one more time. as far as mayweather goes tho, he is NOT undefeated. luis castillo in the first fight wooped him. also folks keep on saying that he is way bigger but what real welterweight has he fought. shane mosley, paul williams, margacheeto lol, cotto, joshua clotty? he is a 130lb fighter posing as a welter wieght. check out his stats. this fight for marquez is not impossible. hard, testing, odds stacked against yes maybe but if you consider JMM, and Manny in the same league as ido .. i must say im giving marquez a shot. how the hell can some folks say that JMM has no chance and Manny does is beyond me. yea marquez has not been past 140 ever but niether was pac and he did great. i see marquez in the middle of the ring,, loosing the first couple of rounds and in the late round putting on pressure and causing may to not come out in the later rounds he cant take losing .. my opinion. other side of the coin could very well be he gets destroyed there is that posiblily, yet i highly doubt it and let me tell you why. if you notice in fights with marquez he never gets his eyes of the boxer. even when they barage him with punches, this is a sing of BALLS, and skill. another reason why he is so hard to take out, he see’s most punches coming and counters auwesome, mix in this quality with his aggressive nature the last few years and trust that he will try and knock may out, not the other way around. i know im going back and forth but here would be my last deciding factor. and the main. speed, JMM needs to be both strong and fast. as strong if not stronger and as fast as he is @ 130. if not he’s the one that will be in trouble.
Hahahah I seen many Floyd fights and seen the way this guy pick pockets his oponents throughout the years and I’m tired of it. Guy asks for way too much much. Poor guy actually thinks he made the money he made because of himself… Mayweather if you are listening!!!!!!! The reason why you made so much money was because of the opponents you faced dude!!! De La Hoya Big Market name bigger then Feather Boy…. Hatton huge fan base in Great Brit. Now he wants to face Pacman on a higher split? if he passes Marquez? If I would or anyone would see the Pacman Mayweather fight is to see Pacman at work not your dancing hit and run bullshit …. Why am I getting the Marquez Mayweather fight? To see Marquez beat the shit out of Floyd…. Marquez been through hell and back in the ring… Mayweather hasn’t… SAID AND DONE….
the best i want to watch is jmm against mp,,that bulshit mayweather hit and run fighting technique is for money only.
You know what junior I’m sure am a big fan and also a big fan of many other boxers as well. And yes Ive seen lots of Marquez fights, witch I have tremendous respect for, but he has never face anyone like Mayweather, through out his career. Don’t get me wrong Marquez is a great counter puncher, but so is Floyd. The speed is going too be too much for him too handle. I notice Marquez makes lots of mistakes, especially in the Manny Pacquaio fight. Notice that he always lets his chin available for him too get easily knocked down. I’m sorry Its just not going too happen, Marquez will loose.
Brian brown u do sound like a fan i mean im giving mayweather credit for wat he has done and wat he was proven with the fights he has had!! but man have u seen JMM fight it looks like u havent!! JMM has a great chance in beating Mayweather The best of any of the fighter mayweather has faced and christain im personally am not a fan of mayweather style but hey its works for him and has workd for good boxers like sweet pee whitaker and alot of hall of famers the problem with fighting liek that is that ur fan base is not ass big but he still does great job in useing it put yea the best who has used that style the best for me its sweet pea (pernell whitaker) yall should look him up he truelly is great!!
JMM is a good boxer and a counter puncher with a big mouth who talk too much while Mayweather Jr is a good boxer and a runner puncher with a big mouth who talk too much too. JMM-Mayweather fight are much exciting than the Pacman-Hatton. Why? . . . . to hear their big mouth after the fight is the much awaited in their fight, so that that the boxing fans will enjoy knowing who’s fighter has a BIGGER mouth who talk really much. I love their style of WORD fighting technique.
Hey Cristian that’s going be wishful thinking for you. Marquez has no clue of a chance with that chicken feather Mayweather. I don;t know what kind of fantasy land that your living in but its just not going too happen. Tell something and really be honest with your self. How many fights have you really seen of Mayweather? Be honest with your self. Get back to me on that one.
Guys guys come one now… JMM has an attitude problem but come on now!!! The first fight with MP great fight and came back from punishment… Very contreversial…. Second fight i think was a toss up despite the ko… See Pacman still left an unfinished story with JMM because of how the fights ended…. I still believe that its still a question on whose better, JMM or PACMAN? And why is it that everyone thinks Pacman has a better chance then JMM with Mayweather??? Hahaha Serious I think Pacman and JMM are a great match up and to me are still evenly matched… Until it is proven otherwise (ribber match)… Marquez has a great chance with that chicken feather Mayweather…
Yall all dont know shit about boxing!! man do you realize that JMM on the frist fight against manny he had to win at least 3 more round in the fight to at least tie so guessing in my shit is correct JMM won 9 round out of twelve to tie in the second fight he was knocked out once and lost bye one piont meaning they won the same number of rounds a real tie but it was that one knock out piont that made him loose!! there for the only 2 boxers that have made manny go the distance have been erik morales and JMM!! And dont give me that bullshit he hurt his wrist u want a champ then make him a champ Julio cesar chavez broke his wrist in a fight and still won that hoe by knock out!!!
It is hilarious 2 hear that JMM is considering all of these training techniques. Did any1 happen 2 c episodes of the 24/7 documented on Pacman/Hatton?? If so, u will be able 2 determine that it doesn’t matter how u train, but instead how u utilize the training in the fight! Hatton didn’t display any of the techniques he practiced! In fact, it looked like he DIDN’T train @ all. My point is Floyd always impresses his fans when it comes time 2 fight. I personally believe PBF will win this fight effortlessly! It’s not going 2 take much, just anticipate his aggression an TKO him like he did Hatton w/the Check left hook!!!
Hey Hitman….Your absolutely right JMM is a looser. He had his chance with Manny twice and blew it. And for those who say that he won the first fight is on drugs or suffering from a denial syndrome. How can someone get dropped three time in the first round and get away with a 10-8
when it was suppose to be 10-7 and still get a Draw out of it. that’s beyond me……Anyhow Marquez is waist of time.
JMM is a sore loser!
yes it is a good thing.a cross training program.i don’t know if he could catch up because cross training programs are done by athletes on off-seasons.marquez should have done that before his boxing training starts.anyway he is a great athlete he could adjust as well.as for his fight with pacman, opinions are just opinions and the judges’ verdict is final.i believe that judges knows how to score the “ten point must system” accordingly and i believe there was no game fixing that happened.the fights could go bothways but the tkds did matter in the decission.
JMM should be thankful of MP, if not for MP, he’ll still be an underrated boxer. In his 2 fights against MP, he’s just really fortunate. In their 1st bout, MP injured his left fist after the 3 KDs of JMM, else it would be finished in 2nd or 3rd round. In their 2nd match, MP struggled to make weight and dehydrated himself, though MP was still able to KD JMM in one of the rounds, the weight problem played a big role. I’m definitely sure that when a 3rd match happens in 140, JMM will suffer the same fate as Hatton.
JMM is a great fighter and i know he have a chance of beating Floyd Jr, but i disagree with him that he won in those two fights with Pacquaio . The knockdowns is the deciding points besides in the frst fight one of the judges admitted that he made a mistake in scoring, just giving Pacquaio 10 to 7 instead of 10 to 6. Dont get me wrong Marquez is a very good counter puncher and a skill fighter but on the other hand Pacquaio’s skill is really improving a lot. His strenght , power and defense is amazing. Marquez might beat Floyd because Floyd haven’t fight for almost a year in a half. And i don’t believe that Pacquaio is ducking Marquez its all about the money now. If he beat Floyd, Pacquaio will fight him again, even Freddie Roach said that. Now if these two fighters collide again in welterweight division i am pretty sure Pacquaio will beat him convincingly. Marquez will be very suprise now that Pacquaio can handle his counter punching style now. If i were Marquez just prepare for the coming fight against Mayweather, then if he win he will have another shot with the pound for pound king and the best fighter in the world the Pacman.
i like juan marquez as the technical boxer that he is but as a person.. NO WAY!!! he is too egoistic he cant accept defeat from pacman and be humble about it…. that is why pacman is so great, loved and respected.. he has class.. he humbly accepts defeat and never badmouthed his opponents unlike marquez he is like a faggot of a crying baby.. but i hope though he would win against mayweather coz compared to mayweather.. i’d choose the lesser evil in marquez who are both egoistics and braggarts.. i want marquez to fight pacman again and be sent to wonderland for good… to shut his big bad mouth and serve him well..
If I were pacquiao, I would not give Marquez a fight. He was disrespectfulwhen he visit the Phil..I believe he was treated nicely by the Filipinos, but instead he tried to embarace the champion. He is not a big draw in the sport. He just want to hit it big before he retires. It doesnot matter what he is campaigning, that he won both fights. The records will show. And I believe one of the judges on the 1st fight admitted on making a mistake in scoring for the Pacman…….And also why is berstain duplicating Pacquiao’s training by adding basketball ? I believe that Berstain has became a BELIEVER in PACMAN….Funny 🙂
