KO Entertainment announced yesterday that the Cuban Yuriorkis Gamboa, the interim WBA featherweight champion, accepted to travel to Mexico and defend his title against Guty Espadas Jr. on July 25th in Merida, MX.
Gamboa is known as an extraordinary amateur stand out who won every title imaginable including Olympic gold.
Gamboa displays the classic Cuban style of boxing: speed and superior boxing technique.
Espadas Jr. holds a 45-7, 28KO record and the bout will mark the second time he challenges for a world title. In 2000 he was crowned as the WBC featherweight champion when defeated the Filipino Luisito Espinoza with an eleven round TKO. He was defeated in his second defense of the title by Erik “Terrible” Morales in Las Vegas.
Espadas Jr. stepped up to challenges Gamboa by defeating Naoki Matsuda of Japan in an elimination bout last year in Chetumal. Espadas Jr.
last defeat came at the hands of “Rocky” Juarez in 2004. Since then he has won 7 bouts in a row.
