Erik “Terrible” Morales has been sanction to fight Jorge “La Hiena” Barrios on September 17 as part of the under card for “Star Power: Mayweather vs. Ortiz”. Morales will be fighting for the absolute WBC super lightweight title.

Morales was in Mexico with President Jose Sulaiman. Morales will begin his training at the Otomi Ceremonial Center in Mexico.

“I have made many changes in my life to return to boxing. I showed Maidana there is something called school and if you do good, technique is above all,” said Morales. He added, “This is a great opportunity, I’m on the right track, next year we’ll face the best in the world. I feel fully experienced strong and young.”

Barrios and Morales were originally to meet last year but due to a legal situation, Barrios could not travel to Mexico. A recent court ruling in Argentina has cleared Barrios to fight in Las Vegas. Jorge Barrios was originally slated to fight Friday in Tucuman, Argentina.

Also on the undercard WBC super welterweight world champion Canelo Alvarez who is hosting a press conference today in Los Angeles is announcing his upcoming fight with Alfonso Gomez. Stay tune for full report.

  1. JESSE If ANYONE really believes that Chavez Jr or Canelo would fight for FREE then they need their heads examined or emergency psychiatric help!! It’s one of the BIGGEST potential $$$ fights in the game, especially in the Southwest and Mexico. That “I’ll fight for free” trash talk is pure unadulterated BULLS**T!! Can ANYBODY actually believe that Chavez or Canelo will fight for FREE while Arum and Oscar make MILLIONS??? hahahahaha!!!

Com’on man, you know better than that. Honestly, I believe that they will fight in about a year or so. That’s probably why they will NOT be fighting the BEAT fighters of their individual divisions. A loss by either fight would be a disaster at this point.

And.. as for Chavez “ending” Canelo’s career.. ahhhh.. Chavez couldn’t/didn’t end the careers of lesser quality C- fighters like John “The Over Hyped Dud” Duddy, Billy (22-9) Lyell, Troy “Who The Hell Is He??” Rowland and Matt “The Human Punching Bag” Vanda, just to name a few. SOOOO.. what makes you think he will/can end Canelo’s career?? Maybe I’m missing something. Would you please care to explain?? Thanks!

And.. YES, I do feel that Canelo is already good enough to face Chavez Jr and give him the fight of his life and.. with a good chance of winning. Due to the weight issue and taking into consideration that Chavez Jr stepped into the ring on fight night vs Zbik at 180LBS this fight would be better if it took place next summer in order to give Canelo a little more time to put on a few solid pounds. By then Canelo will have bulked up just enough to put a whoopin’ on Junior.

    Oh well… just my opinion.

  2. Eva, chavez didnt ask for that fight, he said he didnt need that fight, the one that needs that fight is canelo. i know theyre in different class weights but canelo keeps talking his shit, like if chavez is gonna go down in weight. if canelo wants to fights he needs to go up in weight. and bob arum, hes not against that fight, he just knows that canelo is not ready to fight chavez. even chavez said he would end canelo’s career if they fight. but if oscar agrees to fight chavez for free, then the fight will be on. bob arum agreed and chavez’ trainer agreed also. now a question for you eva, who was the first mexican fighter to beat manny?

  3. eva, canelo alvares no way better then chavez jr. canelo said he wanted to fight chavez & when chavez agreed to fight canelo & oscar for free, they denied the match. & now canelo is coming out with some crap how he doesnt wanna fight chavez. so if canelo cant walk the walk, he shouldnt be talking shit. that little red gingerbread punk.

  4. jesse rendon chavez jr has not fot eny body good chavez jr dose not deaserv that title sergio martinez dose canelo alvares is good way better then chavez jr

  5. eric moralis deserves a title and all ya Canelo freaks are idiots why don’t ya just suck his nuts ya keep on talking about how great he is but he hasn’t proved shit until the day he fights a real fighter and wins and then he deserves to be talked about they gave him abelt that he does not deserve by fighting nobodies and fighting people that are to old.now chavez jr he earned his title and ya still talk bad about him ya must stupid and just kiss canelo bitch ass.all he does is talk shit and doesn’t back it up.

  6. I agree with EZ. I don’t mind that Morales fights for the title. I don’t agree that he deserves this title shot. They did make this a little more intriguing by Barrios not being part of this now.

  7. EZ-E i think that this is going to be good i think that eric will win this one by split desision or a ud eather way matthysee will get robed like he did with alexander and juda im allways right

  8. EVA, yes, this is an improvement, no doubt. But.. at the same time I do understand where JONNY-BOY is coming from when he points out that BOTH are recent losers fighting for a world title.

As for the fight itself, I will be rooting for Morales to win!! But honestly…I believe that he’s going to lose. My HEART says Morales but my HEAD says Matthysse.

  9. Jonny-boy morales and mayhis deaserv the title shot and the guy that is going to fight is way better then the other guys

  10. Now he’s to fight Matthysse, this is much better than giving Barrios a shot but still doesn’t sit right with me that despite the losses for these two were “controversial” they still were losses but I feel both are deserving fighters worthy of a title fight and it wont be easy for either one. This fight which I still suggest should not be for a title really beefs up Mayweather/Ortiz a lot more if only they put Canelo in there with a guy who has a real chance it would be much better.

  11. EZ-E no hun the winner by ko will be victor ortiz because by a unanamis dision it will be maywether because if not the jugdes will still it from victor like they did with willams and lara and willams and martinez because martinez won the first fight

  12. EVA, I truly believe Ortiz will prove to be a very worthy opponent and Mayweather will have to be at his best to win. If all these prolonged layoffs have taken a toll on Floyd’s skills it will show because Victor will do all he possibly can to make most of this GOLDEN opportunity.

But when it’s all over Michael Buffer will say… The winner by nanimous decision.. Flooooyyyd Maaaaaayyyy-weeeaaatherrrr!!!

And yes, Suliaman should retire. He’s done the sport a lot of harm over the years, especially lately..

  13. EZ-E i think that the wbc needs to reaplace sulamin because he is allways makeing bad disisions so what do you think of the maywether ortiz fight

  14. EVA, if Morales wins I believe another fight vs Barrera would be very interesting. I wouldn’t mind seeing that one. Both are past their best days but they mix well together. ALL THREE OF THER FIGHT WERE CONTROVERSIAL DECISIONS. Personally I thought that El Terrible won two of them. But.. if Erik wins he will be looking for the best $$$ fight he can get. I wonder WHO will Suliaman pick a Erik’s mandatory challenger??

  15. ez-e your right deven alexandr dose not deaserv a shot lamont petersion has a title shot for the ibf morales sgould fight khan or barrera otra ves

  16. EVE I believe fighters like Lucas Matheysse or Lamont Peterson or Devon Alexander or even Kaiser Mabuza would’ve been fair. How come Suliaman dedn’t match him up again wqith Maidana. Why?? Because “El Terrible” probably would’ve lost to ALL of them. Even guys like Malignaggi or Juan Diaz would’ve been MORE acceptable than Barrios, don’t you think?????

And… NO, I don’t believe that Erik can beat Pacman. The last TWO times they fought Manny beat him down. As a matter of FACT in their last fight “El Terrible” QUIT in the THIRD ROUND, he REFUSED to get up. He wasn’t even taking much punishment, he got knocked down and didn’t want to fight anymore. He himself admitted it in the post fight interview. I was surprised and saddened by Erik’s actions because I was a BIG fan of his. I STILL admire him but I have to be realistic. The truth is that Erik hasn’t beaten a highly ranked opponent in SIX YEARS, when he beat Manny in March of 2005!! SIX YEARS!! Since then he”s had only EIGHT fights and has lost FIVE of them. That not too good at all. FACTS are FACTS and I have to be as REALISTIC as possible.

  17. ez-e antonses con kien kieres que el terrible c pele yo digo con manny ya le gano un vesw lo puede aser otra ves no kres

  18. @Jonny Boy That’s basically where I’m coming from as well. I can stomach Erik getting a shot and understand that it would’ve been virtually impossible for this to happen without the “aid” of Suliaman, that’s for sure.

  19. As much as I am a fan of Morales (can’t say the same for Barrios as the guy is a wreck), neither has done anything to merit a title fight at this weight Morales fought his heart out but lost. As much as I’d love to see Erick win 4 division titles I don’t want to see it done like this.

  20. EVA Te entiendo bien.

  22. Amigos, I am NOT coming down on Morales, he has been one of my FAVORITES FOR YEARS!! I admire the GREAT MEXICAN BOXING NATION. Sin ellos le boxeo no tiene gusto, sabor ni ‘pique” como nos agrada a nosotros y a TODOS los verdaderos fanaticos. Es la nacion PRINCIPAL de este deporte.

Mexico doesn’t need the garbage that Suliaman/WBC pulls to be recongnized and exalted. The GREAT Mexican Boxing Tradition has PROVEN that they can do it without having someone like Suliaman trying to tarnish their GREAT reputation. He has lost respect for fans in general and continually losing respect for HIMSELF.

True boxing fans are not easily fooled. They can EASILY see what Suliaman has been doing FOR YEARS. We all have seen how he has SOLD OUT to the top promoters in the past. What many DON’T know or DON’T remember was when he brought the WBC to BANKRUPTCY when he ABUSED of his power and got sued for 25 MILLION DOLLARS by a fighter named Graciano Rocchigiani. Back in 1998 the already corrupted Suliaman unjustly STRIPPED Rocchigiani of the WBC 175LB title after he beat the Suliaman “protected” Michael Nunn, a Don King fighter. Nobody expected Rocchigiani to win, but he did, by decision. When Rocchigiani signed to make an optional defense Suliaman wasted no time and UN-JUSTLY STRIPPED HIM!! Rocchigiani sued the WBC/Suliman and was awarded 25 MILLION DOLLARS by the court. The way Suliaman has tried to make the money and continue to “live large” was to INVENT/CREATE new “championship” belts of all ‘colors and flavors’. He started all this “Interim Champion” “Emeritus Champion” “Super Champion” “Diamond Champion” stuff and was the first to create many NEW weight divisions to collect MORE sanctioning fee$$$. Later the other organizations practically forced to do the same. The WBC went bankrupt BUT NOT SULIAMAN. He has always continued “GET HI$” no matter what.

I grew up in this sport, my father and uncle were trainers and managers. My other uncle, my two cousins and myself all used to box, we won many amateur titles before we turned pro many years ago.I used to follow the careers of Mexican fighters like Jose Medal, “Pajarito” Moreno, Alfredo Urbina, Mantequilla Napoles when he left Cuba and moved to Mexico, Saldivar, “Alacran” Torres, Jose Luis Cruz, and later Ruben “Puas” Oliveras who happens to be my ALL TIME MEXICAN FAVORITE along with Gaspar”El Indio” Ortega. I have many of their fights.

I have my reasons for disliking what Suliaman has been doing and I dislike what he doing to the GREAT image of Mexican boxing. Peace to all!!

  23. JESUS Your points are very valid. Maybe Morales hasn’t actually earned this title shot neither but I can accept it mainly because of his very gutsy performance vs Maidana, but.. there are fighters that DESERVE this opportunity more than BOTH Morales and Barrios, especially Barrios, who has earned absolutely NOTHING!!

  24. This reminds of when Chavez was made the mandatory challenger vs Kostya Tzsyu right after Chavez was humiliated by Willy Wise. That shit still stinks…

I don’t agree that Morales should get a title shot so soon. He’s won three of his last eight fights and his wins were against Jose Alfaro, Willie Limond, and Francisco Lorenzo. Yes, he did show a spirited effort vs Maidana fighting with one good eye. Still a lose though. He should be made to get a win against a ranked super lightweight before he gets a title shot. Then again MR Sulaiman runs the show at the WBC. I won’t even get into Jorge Barrios…

  25. EVA It looks like you’re not reading my comment correctly. I NEVER said that Morales doesn’t deserve this title opportunity. I said that BARRIOS doesn’t deserve to fight for the title. I have NO problems “El Terrible” getting a chance to win another title BUT.. it should be AGAINST A WORTHY OPPONENT. There are fighters that have fought for the right to challenge for the title with their SWEAT and BLOOD!! This is an INSULT to them!!!!

  26. Aw com’on man, this is BULLSH*T!! What has Jorge Barros done to merit a JR WETER TITLE SHOT?? Did Suliaman give him “extra points” for the NEGLIGENT HOMICIDE he cause while driving DRUNK?? He’s had only ONE damn fight in the last TWO years when he won a slow boring decision over Colombiano Wilson Alcorro. Who?? Wilson Alcorro?? Yes, the same Wilson Alcorro who had lost FIVE out of his last SIX fights!! Once again Suliaman?WBC is making Mexican boxing look pathetic in looking for the EASIEST way to crown Morales like he did Chavez Jr and Canelo.

As a matter of FACT…. Jorge Barros has NEVER FOUGHT AS A SUPER WELTER IN HIS LIFE!! This SU*KS!!

Little by little the once admired ‘green belt’ is becoming a joke. Oh well….
