Devon Alexander earned a split-decision victory against Lucas Matthysse of Argentina in a 10-round junior welterweight fight on Saturday night.

Two judges scored the fight 96-93, one for Alexander and the other for Matthysse, and the third judge had it 95-94 for Alexander (22-1), giving him the victory in front of his hometown crowd.

The fight was fairly even throughout, with both boxers connecting with several good shots to the head. Alexander (22-1) was knocked down early in the fourth round when Matthysse (28-2) landed a left hook, but he jumped up quickly.

“Matthysse is a rough and tough fighter. I brought the fight out in me because people had their doubts about my abilities as a boxer. The knockdown [first of his career] was a flash knockdown [in the fourth round]. I had to pull it out. I was having flashbacks from my last fight with Bradley, and I wasn’t going to lose two fights in a row. As a matter of fact, I’m never going to lose again.”

The victory came about five months after Alexander lost to Timothy Bradley in a title fight in Michigan after an accidental head butt closed Alexander’s left eye. The ringside doctor stopped the bout in the 10th round, allowing Bradley to hold onto his WBO belt while taking Alexander’s WBC title with an unanimous technical knockout.

It was Matthysse’s fourth fight in the U.S. He suffered his only other loss — a split-decision against Zab Judah—in Newark, New Jersey, on Nov. 6.

“I gave it my all. It was a tough fight but I thought I won. Once again, I was robbed. He’s lucky he won the fight. I thought when I put him down, I’d finish him off but I couldn’t.”

  1. It was pretty close but I think Matthysse won that fight. Alexanders over rated and that should’ve been his third loss but they gave it to him again.
