Beating Ricardo Mayorga was expected from Miguel Cotto who was an 8 to 1 favorite on Saturday night. Before a crowd of 7,247 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and though Cotto won, I wasn’t impress at all with Cotto’s performance.

Mayorga, who has been out of the ring for over 2 years, was much tougher and more conditioned than I imagined. I expected Cotto to KO the trash talking Mayorga in the early rounds but instead Mayorga kept landing the harder punches and controlled most of the opening rounds despite what the judges scored. Unfortunately for the Nicaraguan fighter, he got tired and Cotto got the best of him.

Mayorga should have won a golden globe for his pretending of dislocating his thumb. The replay clearly shows he never landed a solid left punch to cite a hand injury.

After the fight, the 38-year-old former champion Ricardo Mayorga said he would retire from boxing. I hope he does. The TKO victory for Cotto served as the first title defense of his World Boxing Association (WBA) super welterweight championship since beating Foreman last summer for it. Cotto stated that he’s open to a rematch with Antonio Margarito and during the post fight, the “Tijuana Tornado” was on hand. Bob Arum showed much interest in a rematch with Cotto, most likely in July. But with what I saw last night I have to say Margarito will probably win again.

What’s your opinion? Were you impressed with Cotto performance?

  1. I hear you Santino my whole ppv was freezing and skipping untill the main event. So I called my cable provider and got refunded the money for the fight so I pretty much watched the main event free cause that was the only one that showed all the way through. I was pissed but glad I was able to see the main event. I thought Cotto could have finished Mayorga but I think Cotto didn’t expect Mayorga to be in the shape he was and got hit with some hard shots. Either way the only thing truly impressive about Cotto was his ring movement in this fight and Mayorga impressed by simply coming to fight and hanging in there a whole 12 rounds.

  2. Whats up fellas, Thats was a very good fight in my opinion. Both fighters looked very good considering their layoffs. Mayorga looked strong and came to fight as always. I have to say I was impressed by some of the combos mayorga landed on cotto. Cotto fought a very, very smart fight. He didnt underestimate mayorga and he didnt fall in to his traps. Cotto showed great decipline by executing his plan perfectly, which is what the sweet science is all about. I agree with jesus that it doesnt mean anything that Cotto took until the 12th to knock mayorga out. It would have been stupid for cotto to go in there and just throw bombs with mayorga, thats how vernon got himself knockout. Cotto kept his calm and kept his jab in mayorgas face the entire fight(beautiful). Cotto fought a very intelligent fight, expecting a fourth round ko is wishfull thinking. Noone has put mayorga away that easy and there was no reason to believe it would happen this time. Mayorga may be a clown but hes not a chump by any stretch of the imagination, the guy fought hard & went out like a champ. I think cotto still has a few good fights in him, if he fights chaves that kid is going to get the beating hes been avoided all these years and possibly lose the title hbo is about to hand him. I also believe cotto could have beat margarito then and he can beat him now, even with the same game plan as last time. All cotto needs to do is be more aggressive and stay off the ropes. This goes without saying but Im sure Cotto will make sure someone is in margaritos dressing room this time lol.

  3. Mayorga came to fight, imagine that. I think Cotto could have started off faster. I agree that the surgery and the layoff took its toll. Moseley couldn’t knowck out Mayorga either untill the 12th round. Doesn’t mean anything in my opinon. I know Cotto is itching for the Margarito rematch. I hope that fight happens. Cotto was interviewed by the Mexican commentators after the fight and was asked if he would fight Chavez like originally planned last year. With Chavez present, Cotto said he was open to the fight and since they shared the same promoter, it would be easy to make. that would be an interesting fight as well.

  4. Yeah I agree after watching Pacquiao slaughter Margarito I have no doubt that Margarito had loaded gloves against Cotto. Miguel Cotto should be able to beat him.

  5. I agree Mayorga looked good, considering he was off for over 2 years. He had no boxing skills but he freaken hits hard. he was attacking Cotto like a street brawl.. it was interesting fight.

  6. well after being in a lay off for 9 months and having an operation done on his right shoulder in those nine months. yea i like what cotto did. he wore him down jabbed more moved more and connected more. this is his 2nd fight with emmanuel and he is looking better everytime. the best thing about being cotto is that he will always be the underdog lmaoooooo makes it even better when he wins……. mayorga looked real good. he is a great fighter. he has always had my respect. he takes it to far with his words but gotta give him credit. im looking forward for the rematch in june or july with margarito…

  7. In another light, I was also impressed with Mayorga’s perfect and excellent way of selling his fight. He was a superfight hype artist. He was a marketing man in action.

  8. Reaching the 12th rnd was one good reason that impressed me with Mayorga. I expected him to last until the 2nd rnd only. The fight also gave me the idea that Cotto was not really that good anymore. If Mayorga was really a damaged goods and Cotto could not finish him early, that also meant, if ever he fights the Pacman again, Cotto would be lucky to reach and stand in the 4th rnd. In other words, I was even more impressed with Mayorga than Cotto.

  9. Did anybody else have trouble watching this fight? When I bought it the picture was all fuzzy and horrible

  10. Personally I consider that Cotto had a DECENT win but it certainly wasn’t a GREAT win. In my opinion he got hit entirely TOO MUCH and his ‘bad habits’ surfaced from time to time. Yes, he was facing a rather difficult opponent due to Mayorga’s rather uncordinated style but I believe he labored much too heavily to defeat a fighter that basically was inactive for the last 3 years before recently returning a couple of months ago.

  11. Miguel Cotto is damaged goods. To be honest he shouldn’t even be at 154 he shold go back to welter weight, or just retired.

  12. no i think cotto would win the fight with margarito because margarito isnt the same guy eny more and now he cant put enything in the gluvs i think the martinez fight was beter
