Weigh-in Results and Photos
Friday night is fight night as live boxing returns to the San Gabriel Valley in TONIGHT’S show featuring Jose “Shibata” Flores vs. Ishwar “Diablo” Amador in the main event taking place at the Quiet Cannon in Montebello, California.
See official weights and photos from yesterday’s weigh-in as a six-bout card will be showcased 
along with a special exhibition of seven amateur MMA fights to be held before the boxing matches begin. The event is presented by All-Star Promotions.
Promoter Ed Holmes and Matchmaker Pete Hironaka have been promoting their popular Mixed Martial Arts series for the last couple of years; this is their first boxing event in 2010. But the two are well-known in the Southland for their lively pro boxing shows which first began in 1999. The “Battle of the Rising Stars” cards featured many contenders and future champs through the years.
“Yes, this is our first boxing show at Quiet Cannon since maybe two years ago,” Hironaka confirmed.
“We have seven bouts scheduled,” Hironaka further commented. “It’s the semi-finals of the State Amateur MMA Championships with CAMO (California Amateur Martial Arts Organization). There will be some great fights; they don’t wear headgear but they fight in two minute rounds with eight ounce fingerless gloves.”
And fans will also witness the return of many familiar SoCal fighters who are back in the ring after various layoffs.
“Shibata” Flores will continue his comeback quest after his January victory of this year; his foe “Diablo” Amador will also be climbing the stairs once again after a few years away. And Simi Valley’s own Robert “Scrappy” Ortiz laces up as he, too, wants to get back in action inside the ropes.
For other fighters, they hope to add another win to their growing ledger. Light Heavy Tyrell “Hollywood” Hendrix has had seven fights since turning pro. The young slugger has taken to the professional ranks well. At yesterday’s weigh-in, he told me, “I like the whole experience with the no headgear; I love it! I feel like a gladiator.”
I also visited with Team Martinez. Aalan Martinez (brother of fighter Aaron Martinez) was with Adolfo Perez Jr., Tony Rivera and Rodrigo Mosquera from the Eddie Heredia gym. Cutman Rivera said of Aalan, “He’s the East L.A. monster! We had to come up in weight; nobody wants to fight him!”
Regarding his matchup versus Martin Armenta, Martinez predicted: “He’s going down!”
Another fighter willing to go on record with a prediction was “Diablo” Amador, who will be battling 
in the main event. Squaring off against former middleweight titlist “Shibata” Flores, Amador remained confident. “I will win in three rounds!” the Riverside boxer said.
Before they loaded the scales, I had some time to chat with some cornermen known in the boxing scene like cutman Joe Chavez, trainer Willie Silva, cutman “Indian” Willie Schunke and others.
I also chatted with three generations of combat sports: Robert Ortiz, Robert “Scrappy” Ortiz Jr. and Timmy Ortiz. “Scrappy” is on tap for the co-main tonight and with him was his father and son. Timmy, who’s now 12 years old, was a fixture in the ring when he was just a toddler. He would be seen hoisted on his dad “Scrappy’s” shoulders back in the day. Now the boy is carrying on in the Ortiz fight tradition and has already been training in MMA. The team, who were all wearing “WAR/Scraptime Fight Club” T-shirts, says Timmy already has earned a fight name. “His nickname is ‘Scrap ‘Em’!” Ortiz Jr. tells me with a chuckle.
