Bob Arum, President of Top Rank Promotions, might announce next week that Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto will travel north to the super welterweight division to challenge Yuri Foreman for the WBA 154 lbs. title at Madison Square Garden in New York City in New York City.
As recently as last week, Foreman was in the running to face Filipino super star Manny Pacquaio for his WBA title but now Pacquiao will face Joshua Clottey on March 13th.
“The same day that we were going to sign the contracts to fight Pacquiao is when Manny decided to step back. We have returned to the original plan of defending the title against Cotto in June,” Murray Wilson stated to Puerto Rican newspaper Primera Hora. Wilson is the manager of Foreman.
“This is the fight that Miguel wants and we do too. It would be a pleasure to fight against a man we consider a great champion,” Wilson added.
Foreman, who last November defeated boricua Daniel Santos to capture the WBA title, emerged as a possible opponent for Pacquiao when the mega fight against Mayweather Jr. was discarded. Pacquiao reneged fighting Foreman because of the clear disadvantage Pacquiao would have against the much taller Foreman.
At that point, Arum resuscitated the idea of facing Cotto against Foreman on the eve of the annual Puerto Rican Parade in New York City.
“We still do not have anything signed for the fight against Cotto but on a scale of 1 to 10, I would say the possibility of fighting Cotto is a 9,” Wilson said.
Last November, Cotto suffered his second loss in his career when he was defeated by Pacquiao in Las Vegas, NV.
I agree, Cotto should win this one by KO, this reminds me of the Michael Jennings fight somehow.
I hope to see Evangelista Cotto on his corner!
if this fight take place ,Cotto will win by TKO.
